Recently there was a report, or rather, a petition in which it asked the NHTSA to investigate Tesla over multiple reports of cars suddenly accelerating forwards by themselves. If true, this would be incredibly alarming as it could lead to all manner of accidents, and in worst case scenarios, even death.
Tesla had previously kept mum on the reports but the company has since published a post on its blog in which they basically refute all of the claims. They allege that this petition is not only false, but was created by a Tesla short-seller. They also state that they investigate every incident that is brought to their attention, and that everything they’ve found so far shows that the car operates as intended.
According to Tesla, “In other words, the car accelerates if, and only if, the driver told it to do so, and it slows or stops when the driver applies the brake.” The company also says that they routinely review customer complaints with the NHTSA and has been transparents about all their incidents.
“We are transparent with NHTSA, and routinely review customer complaints of unintended acceleration with them. Over the past several years, we discussed with NHTSA the majority of the complaints alleged in the petition. In every case we reviewed with them, the data proved the vehicle functioned properly.”
