What is a sandwich? For most of us, a sandwich is basically two slices of bread with some kind of filling in the middle, and that’s what a student in an Auckland university tried to achieve by creating what can only be described as an “Earth sandwich”, where two slices of bread are placed at opposite ends of the Earth, with the Earth being in the middle, or the “filling” so to speak.
Speaking to RNZ, the student in question Etienne Naude managed to find someone living on other side of the world in Spain to help him out. “It’s amazing that we’ve actually been able to collaborate and do something like this at exact opposite points of the globe.”
He added, “We made sure to get the exact location with Google Maps, to get us within a few metres range, and then we used the actual image data on Google Maps to pinpoint ourselves even closer than that.”
Naude noted that due to the 12-hour time difference, it actually made this a lot harder to organize. There was also the issue of finding the precise opposite spot which was accessible and wasn’t covered by water and was also accessible for them to pull this off. While seemingly frivolous, it is actually a pretty fun idea and we’re glad that Naude managed to achieve what he calls a long-term goal of his.
